Dear Forum members
I'm delighted to formally launch the consultation of the attached draft Scottish Geodiversity Charter. This is a big development for the Forum, and we've received great support from the Scottish Government, Scottish Natural Heritage and the British Geological Survey to get to this stage. It is over to us now to promote the charter and encourage organisations to comment by 29th February, and in due course sign up to the Charter.
Please circulate the information below to any individual or organisation you think might be interested - in particular to key contacts that you know personally in relevant organisations.
Best wishes
Angus
Consultation on the draft Scotland's Geodiversity Charter
Scotland's geodiversity is world-class, the foundation of our ecosystems and delivering essential benefits and services for society. The Scottish Geodiversity Forum is consulting on a draft Geodiversity Charter for Scotland, encouraging government, local authorities, companies, organisations and individuals to work together to raise awareness of geodiversity and integrate geodiversity in policy, decision making and guidance to deliver sustainable management of land and water.
The draft Geodiversity Charter sets out why geodiversity is important, and presents a vision that geodiversity is recognised as an integral and vital part of our environment, economy, heritage and future sustainability to be safeguarded for existing and future generations in Scotland. The draft Charter includes recommended actions for different stakeholders and a range of case studies. It was prepared by a working group of the Scottish Geodiversity Forum, with observers and facilitation from the British Geological Survey, the Scottish Government and Scottish Natural Heritage.
The draft Charter is now available for consultation, and can be downloaded from the Scottish Geodiversity Forum's website at scottishgeodiversityforum.org/charter/. We would be delighted to receive comments from any organisation or individual with an interest in Scotland's geodiversity. General comments are welcome, and you may wish to consider in particular:
- if you agree that Scotland's geodiversity is important and that there is a need for action
- do you share the Forum's vision for Scotland's geodiversity
- are you willing to commit to actions to fulfil this vision, and do you have further examples of action that has already been taken to promote and safeguard our geodiversity.
Comments should be submitted by 29th February 2012, preferably by email to Angus Miller at chair@scottishgeodiversityforum.org. Once the Charter is finalised organisations will be invited to sign up to the Charter, before a formal launch later in 2012. Organisations and individuals are also encouraged to join the Scottish Geodiversity Forum.
